Whyteleafe Village to benefit from vital crossing scheme
Residents in the village of Whyteleafe in Caterham Valley are set to benefit from a scheme that has recently been approved by Surrey County Council, to implement pedestrian crossing facilities in the vicinity of Hillside Road.
The busy A22 runs straight through the village of Whyteleafe but from the crossing just south of South Whyteleafe Station to the one in the centre of the village, there is no safe means to cross the road. Many elderly people live in developments in the area and there are no safe crossing places to access the bus stops on either side of the A22 near the junction with Hillside, creating a very dangerous situation for all pedestrians.
Lib Dem County Councillor Jeffrey Gray, who continued the campaign for crossing facilities in Whyteleafe previously championed by his predecessor David Lee, explained: "I am delighted that this scheme has finally been approved. Residents have been calling for action for a number of years, but a lack of local funding meant nothing was done. Sadly, there was a fatality at this site after it had already been raised as an area of concern. Highway officers are now finalising the details of the scheme and I look forward to being able to update residents on the progress of the scheme in the near future."
