Lib Dems Saddened by News of University Job Losses

28 Feb 2019

News released today has revealed that the University of Surrey are planning to cut their staff, with all staff being given the option of voluntary redundancy*. The University has released a letter, sent to all staff, which highlights that one of the key factors influencing this decision is the uncertainty surrounding the UK's position in the EU, and how this may affect the University's financial position.

Cllr Fiona White, County Councillor for Guildford West, said:
"I am very saddened to hear this news as the University is a great boost to the community in Surrey, and provides a hub of learning for not only Surrey residents but also those who choose to move and study here. I am worried that the impact on universities from Brexit will mean that our highly diverse student populations are going to dwindle whilst students from other countries don't feel welcome to come here anymore.

"Whilst it is clear that the uncertainty surrounding Brexit is one of the contributing factors, it is important that this does not have a negative impact on the educational service provided by the university. It would be very disappointing if this is the start of the UK's well respected higher education system going downhill.

"But perhaps this is a good opportunity for the whole higher education system to be reviewed, and for there to be more opportunities outside the typical university route opened up to students?"
