Lib Dems launch petition to axe Surrey's "Tory Tip Tax"
Liberal Democrat county councillors in Surrey have launched a petition calling for Surrey County Council to abolish its charges for residents disposing of DIY waste - known locally as the "Tory Tip Tax". The petition follows a consultation from the Government announcing that they oppose the principle of councils charging residents for disposing of DIY waste and will consider changing the law if councils continue to charge. Surrey County Council introduced these charges in September 2016 despite overwhelming opposition to the charges in the responses to the County Council's consultation.
Cllr Stephen Cooksey, Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, said today:
"I am calling on residents across Surrey to sign this petition calling on the County Council to axe the "Tory Tip Tax" immediately. The consultation from the Government shows that the writing is clearly on the wall for councils charging residents for disposing of household DIY waste. In the light of this, Surrey County Council should not wait for the Government to force their hand but proactively axe these charges and put residents first.
"Liberal Democrat county councillors have opposed these charges from day one, pointing out that they were at odds with government guidance on charges for disposal of household waste and that the charges gave a green light to fly-tippers across the county. The Conservative Cabinet should listen to residents and do the right thing by axing these charges straight away."
