Lib Dems call for proper debate over future of Surrey's libraries
Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council are calling for a proper debate over alternative options for the future of the county's libraries.
Speaking in response to the decision today by the County Council's Conservative Cabinet to press ahead with the unpopular 'Community Partnered Libraries' proposals, where 10 of the county's libraries will be run by volunteers or face closure, Liberal Democrat Communities Spokesperson Cllr John Orrick said: "Alternative proposals have been put forward by a number of organisations across Surrey that keep these libraries as part of the core library network, with one full time member of staff in each library, supported by volunteers, and with the volunteers being given a real say in how the libraries can provide more services and become community hubs.
"These proposals would make the libraries truly community partnered, while maintaining professional staff and important computer links. They are also very likely to save money due to reduced training costs compared to the Conservative administrations proposals, which they have already declared won't save a penny."
"The Conservatives are obstinately pushing forward with their plans, but the residents of Surrey deserve better. I will be calling for a proper scrutiny of the decision that the Conservative Cabinet has made, and the alternatives that have been put forward."
