Lib Dem success as Surrey County Council lobbies Government to avoid £37m school cuts
Liberal Democrats have welcomed the decision of Surrey County Council to write to the 11 MPs that represent the county, asking them to lobby government over the funding shortfall for Surrey schools.
Last month, the county council unanimously adopted a Liberal Democrat motion calling for the county council to recognise the shortfall in the government's funding offer and calling for more resources for Surrey schools.
Cllr Will Forster, who proposed the motion at Council and launched an online petition against the cuts, said today:
"I welcome the Council's letter to MPs, lobbying for a better deal for Surrey schools, as it is important that on this issue we speak with one voice. It is important too that this lobbying is done in an open and transparent way, rather than behind closed doors.
"Government needs to understand the real pressures that schools in the county face, and release the extra funds which would avert real problems in the future in terms of staffing and resources. Surrey schools could lose £37m by 2020 and we must do everything we can to make sure that does not happen".
