The 8th March 2019 marks International Women's Day across the globe, and we Liberal Democrats at Surrey County Council want to wish all the strong women across Surrey, and further, a very happy International Women's Day. At County Hall four of our nine Liberal Democrat councillors are women, and this is something we are proud of but hoping to further improve on in all future local elections.

The Liberal Democrat women who form a very important part of our group at County Hall have been talking about what International Women's Day means to them, and some of the women they look up to:

Angela Goodwin, County Councillor for Guildford North, said:

"It's a privilege to be part of politics and be involved in helping people in the local community. It would be great to see even more women getting involved, of all ages; you're never too young or too old to get involved, everyone can bring something to the table."

Penny Rivers, County Councillor for Godalming North, said:

"The woman I respect who had a major impact on my life is Miss Edith Spence. She was Headteacher at St John's Preparatory School, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. She encouraged us to walk tall and speak up and work for the common good."
"We stand on the shoulders of giants"

Fiona White, County Councillor for Guildford West, said:

"I have worked with other women since I got involved with active politics and know what varied experience they bring with them. We really can, and do make a difference."

Hazel Watson, County Councillor for Dorking Hills, said:

"International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women around the world including in Surrey and to encourage more women to be successful and to reach their full potential."
