Conservatives Refuse to Debate Government's Plans for School Transport in Surrey
The Lib Dem group proposed a motion at the County Council meeting on 15th June to urge the Government to retain free school transport. However, the Conservative administration at County Hall refused to debate the subject in time to respond to the Government's consultation's deadline of 25th June.
The Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Transport on Surrey County Council, Councillor Janet Maines said: "I am appalled that the Conservative administration at County Hall has voted not to debate this important subject until after the Government's current consultation deadline."
She added: "It appears that only the Liberal Democrats are willing to argue for Surrey residents to retain free school transport for those children who qualify. We need to keep free school transport in order to reduce the number of children travelling to school by motor car, thereby decreasing the congestion on our roads and the resulting air pollution."
