Common sense prevails on rat poison

4 Oct 2010

News that the use of rat poison by businesses and householders is to be protected in an EU regulation has been welcomed.

There were fears that a ban on the use of anti-coagulant in rodenticides could lead to an explosion in the rat population and could potentially threaten human health. However, MEPs have voted in Strasbourg to exclude the chemical from regulations.

Lib Dem MEP Graham Watson commented: "Unfortunately the use of poisons is sometimes unavoidable. This package balances concerns for the environment and human health with reality, whilst removing from the market some of the most dangerous chemicals. This vote shows that, contrary to Europhobic scaremongering, common sense can and does prevail in Brussels!"
