53 burglaries in Surrey go unsolved every week, Lib Dems reveal

3 May 2022

The Liberal Democrats have slammed the Conservative Government for being soft on crime, as they reveal that 83.8% of burglaries in Surrey went unsolved by the police last year.

Analysis by the Liberal Democrats of new Home Office figures show that 3265 burglary cases were closed by Surrey in 2021, but in 2735 of them no suspect was identified. That equates to 53 unsolved local burglaries every week.

The figures show that just 3.8% of local burglaries (124) resulted in a suspect being charged.

Ahead of the local elections on Thursday 5th May, the Liberal Democrats are calling for a return to proper community policing across the country.

Paul Kennedy, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on crime and policing for Surrey said:

"Crime is soaring on the Conservatives' watch. They are soft on crime and letting far too many criminals get away with it. As a result, too many people's lives in Surrey are being ruined by burglaries.

"The Conservative Government are taking local people for granted and making communities in Surrey less safe. A vote for the Liberal Democrats at these elections is a vote to send a message that enough is enough.

"Liberal Democrats are working hard to make Surrey safe and help residents feel safe too. We need a return to proper community policing, where officers are visible, trusted and focused on cutting crime."
