Hazel has represented the Dorking Hills on the County Council since 1993, is a non-executive director of the Mole Valley Housing Association, and a governor of The Ashcombe and Surrey Hills schools. She was until it was abolished late last year, a member of the Surrey Police Authority and has served on the Board of Age Concern Surrey. Hazel also chaired the County Council's Adults and Community Care Select Committee and was Vice Chairman of the Corporate Management Select Committee.

Hazel is married to Michael and has two teenage children. She initially worked for the Confederation of British Industry where she developed Education and Training Policy and then qualified as a solicitor specialising in intellectual property litigation. She has also served on the Quaker Council for Social Responsibility and Education.

Hazel's priorities for the Dorking Hills are:

- to ensure that our roads and footpaths are properly repaired and maintained;

- to protect the area from inappropriate development;

- to increase youth service provision such as at The Malthouse in Dorking; and

- to ensure that there is adequate respite care for carers.
