Lib Dems slam County waste policy

1.25.05pm GMT Tue 30th Nov 2004

Liberal Democrats criticised the Conservative administration's policy on waste in Surrey at a recent County Council meeting. Councillor Tom Sharp, Lib Dem Spokesman on the Environment said, "The Conservative administration is placing too much emphasis on incineration as a way of dealing with Surrey's waste."

"They should have done much more and should have acted sooner to work with Boroughs and Districts, and the people of Surrey, to reduce the amount of waste and to facilitate re-use and recycling. They should also have done more work to encourage new technologies, some using quite small facilities, for waste disposal to avoid both landfilling and incineration."

Councillor Sharp added, "The Conservative administration's inaction means that Surrey will lose out all round. Should the existing levels of waste to landfill continue in 2005/06, penalties of up to £6 million may be incurred by the Council."
