20 mph zones reduce the number of casualties by nearly three quarters

The introduction of more 20 mph zones in appropriate locations throughout Surrey moved a step closer today with the passing of a Liberal Democrat motion proposed by Cllr David Goodwin (Guildford South West) and seconded by Cllr John Doran (Horsell). This highlighted research showing that the chances of being killed as a pedestrian when hit by a vehicle double between 30 mph and 35 mph.

David Goodwin said: "The further implementation of 20 mph zones is an important step in making our roads safer. If implemented in residential areas, the result would not only be an improvement in road safety for pedestrians and cyclists, but also a reduction in the number of communities cut in half by fast moving traffic, with a better balance between the rights of all road users."

John Doran said: "I have three schools in my division within half a mile of each other and the area has become one big rat run. Introducing more 20 mph zones would definitely help to alleviate those problems."

Research published by the Child Accident Prevention Trust has shown that 20 mph zones reduce the number of casualties by nearly three quarters. Reducing average speeds by just 2 mph could prevent 23,000 injuries across the UK each year.

David Goodwin concluded: "It is important now that this idea is put swiftly into practice. Our residents want safer streets, particularly around schools, and the introduction of more 20 mph zones will certainly help that." The Council agreed that the subject would be put forward to Local Committees for implementation in appropriate locations, both in residential areas in towns and in country villages.
